Harvard Graduate School of Education: Alumni of Color Conference
Learning Objectives:
- List the low percentage of Black male educators in K-12 systems and Higher Education institutions
- Discuss organizational theory and the maintenance of the status quo
- Critique hiring and retention practices that have been used to increase the representation of Black male educators
This presentation explored the lack of Black and Latinx male teachers in American K-12 classrooms. Students of color make up almost half of all students in public primary and secondary schools, but this same percentage is not reflected in their classroom teachers. The P&P team used various organizational development frameworks to make sense of why over 80% of public-school teachers are white. The team’s recommendations included a nationwide evaluation of values, priorities, and best practices, as well as the creation and incentivizing of bold policies and procedures to recruit and retain male teachers of color.
